Back at the hospital

A few weeks ago, I started to have neck pain. And while my little friends (here Cleopatra, my favorite chick) tried the best they can to massage me, I asked my parents to seek the opinion of our great team of doctors at Seattle Children's hospital. The MRI revealed that the neck pain was created by a brain tumor that was pushing on my spinal chord. A lot of complicated words, but well, I am 8 year-old now so I understood what was happening.

Yesterday, I went through the same long surgery than when I was 3 months-old and the doctors succeeded to remove the tumor. Great news.
I am now recovering from the surgery with my parents at my side. It is not very comfortable here and I miss my friends at school, but I do get to watch a lot of great movies.
We will work on this blog every now and then to keep you all posted.

Maarten, you most beautiful, brace boy inside and out, just imagine all the extra room you now have in your brain for music! I hope Brahms soothes you during your recovery and Beethoven gives you strength to heal and hurry home.
Hugs to you and your loving mom and dad.

  6. Maarten,

It is Dan the violinist-you might also remember me as Dash's dad from your class at school. It was just lovely to chat with you the other day on stage at the Vashon Chorale performance! I was playing violin and you told me you loved Tchaikovsky, and especially the Nutcracker ballet! I was so impressed with you, and now I am so moved by your bravery and resilience. Very best wishes for a swift recovery! Dan & Dash

  8. Hey Maarten,

I wonder what kind of music you are listening to in the hospital. Do they let you listen to Mozart? I am so proud of you and can't wait to see you in Thriftway again and give you a big hug. Molly P.

  18. Dear Maarten,

We're hoping that your surgeons did a beautiful job so that your neck feels all better now. We're also hoping that you are warm and comfortable. Let us know if and when we can come visit you and help remind you of home. Should we sneak your chicken in to see you? We can bring our portable record player and a crate of classical music records if you want to hear some old fashioned music. You always have the most beautiful and heartfelt reactions to music. Here's hoping that you will be thrilling the crowds again this summer at Ober Park with your original and inventive hat dances. No band can out compete you once you get on the dance floor even if it's grass. Hope to see you soon!
    Love, Charlie, Theresa and Charlie
